RAF Coltishall is a former RAF airbase which closed in 2006. It was acquired by Norfolk County Council in 2013.

In 2009, HMP Bure was constructed on part of the site whilst the former residential accommodation of the RAF airbase is now the village of Badersfield.

Since Norfolk County Council acquired RAF Coltishall they have been seeking to realise their vision for the site, which includes income generation, job creation and the protection of the site’s heritage assets.

In April 2014, Norfolk County Council decided that a  solar farm would be an appropriate use of the airfield at former RAF Coltishall. A planning application for a solar farm on the airfield was submitted to North Norfolk District Council and Broadland District Council in October 2014. These applications were approved in December 2014 and construction of the solar farm’s first phase started in February 2015. The first phase entered commercial operation in March 2015 and the second phase will enter operation in Spring 2016.
